Purpose of Learn This

I created Learn This to help others learn and improve their lives. I want to share my own ideas as well as to give back to others since I’ve learned so much that way myself. Learning things about life, career, leadership, and relationships are very important to me for home, business and the spiritual world. Most of those things I learned or started to learn from someone else and this site allows me to provide that same unique place that I can share, teach and give back again to others.

I’m a HUGE (and I really mean HUGE) proponent of self learning, continuous personal development and continuous learning throughout life. I know that learning stimulates your mind, keeps a person healthy and can add a lot of joy to one’s life by exploring areas of interest and keeping the brain continuously stimulated and strengthening its memory. My goal for this site is to deliver valuable articles that have some meaning to people and not just a bunch of useless or news related daily tidbits. I truly hope you enjoy and can learn from the articles here on Learn This .

About Mike King

As you may already know from some articles, I’m a mountain unicyclist ! Shocking, I know. I learned to ride when I was 11 years old and just got more and more into offroad riding over the years. I started a club to meet other unicyclists in Calgary called, “The Calgary Mountain Unipsychos ” and still regularly ride within the city and in the great Canadian Rockies. I’ve got many other sports interests, preferably including water. I love learning and am constantly consuming my time reading and learning about the things I have interest in.
By day, like most people in life, I too work for a living. I’m an electrical engineer working in Calgary, AB in the Oil and Gas industry for Advanced Measurements . We build mobile service control systems and information systems to manage data between the field and office. I’m the rig systems engineering manager and have been working there since 2000. I spend a lot of time honing my management skills and love working to improve performance of my teams. I’ve shifted more and more from technical work to people management and I truly enjoy it more! It’s a great service to others (and the company) when I can also make a lasting difference to people’s lives as a manager. That’s my goal at least, anyway.

By night, I’m a part time freelance 3D animation artist (operating Ethereal 3D ). I use Luxology‘s modo for most of my graphics work. All my other time goes towards all the other wonderful things in my life, my beautiful wife, friends and family, God, reading, hobbies, sports and pets.

I strive to lead a service oriented life which God has taught me to do by focusing my work and relationships on others. This type of service has provided me with closer friends, much more joy and a passion to live my life with meaning and purpose.

Is the financial plan of mediocrity -- a dream-stealing, soul-sucking dogma known as "The Slowlane" your plan for creating wealth? You know how it goes; it sounds a lil something like this:
"Go to school, get a good job, save 10% of your paycheck, buy a used car, cancel the movie channels, quit drinking expensive Starbucks mocha lattes, save and penny-pinch your life away, trust your life-savings to the stock market, and one day, when you are oh, say, 65 years old, you can retire rich."
The mainstream financial gurus have sold you blindly down the river to a great financial gamble: You've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by recklessly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. This impotent financial gamble dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair -- sacrifice your adult life for a financial plan that reaps dividends in the twilight of life. Accept the Slowlane as your blueprint for wealth and your financial future will blow carelessly asunder on a sailboat of HOPE: HOPE you can find a job and keep it, HOPE the stock market doesn't tank, HOPE the economy rebounds, HOPE, HOPE, and HOPE. Do you really want HOPE to be the centerpiece for your family's financial plan?
Drive the Slowlane road and you will find your life deteriorate into a miserable exhibition about what you cannot do, versus what you can. For those who don't want a lifetime subscription to "settle-for-less" and a slight chance of elderly riches, there is an alternative; an expressway to extraordinary wealth that can burn a trail to financial independence faster than any road out there.
  • Why jobs, 401(k)s, mutual funds, and 40-years of mindless frugality will never make you rich young.
  • Why most entrepreneurs fail and how to immediately put the odds in your favor.
  • The real law of wealth: Leverage this and wealth has no choice but to be magnetized to you.
  • The leading cause of poorness: Change this and you change everything.
  • How the rich really get rich - and no, it has nothing to do with a paycheck or a 401K match.
  • Why the guru's grand deity - compound interest - is an impotent wealth accelerator.
  • Why the guru myth of "do what you love" will most likely keep you poor, not rich.
  • And 250+ more poverty busting distinctions...
Demand the Fastlane, an alternative road-to-wealth; one that actually ignites dreams and creates millionaires young, not old. Change lanes and find your explosive wealth accelerator. Hit the Fastlane, crack the code to wealth, and find out how to live rich for a lifetime.

"This is by far the best book ever written on the subject, better than Rich Dad Poor Dad, better than Think and Grow Rich, better than any book by Donald Trump..."
~ Amazon reader review
"You'll learn more in 2 days from this book than you will in 2 years of business college courses..."
~ Amazon reader review
"There are moments in your life where a light bulb just seems to turn on, a switch just seems to flip. If you're looking to induce one of these, look no further than this book."
~ Amazon reader review
"I can promise you that there is a clarity that comes with reading this book that no other book on the market will ever give you."
~ Amazon reader review
"The best book on acquiring wealth ever written..."
~ Amazon reader review
"I loved this book. It is dripping in authenticity and real-world experience. From the first, authentic page I was hooked. MJ DeMarco not only has created a book that motivates like nothing else I have read, he also provides the most important thing: a true framework for evaluating business decisions. It's safe to say that had I absorbed this book 10 years ago, I would be at least $100k-$200k richer today."
~ Amazon reader review
"...this book delivers much wisdom about business, money, and the creation of wealth. I have already had my first "liquidation event" and what this author says about how to get there is rock-solid truth."
~ Amazon reader review
"Not since Think and Grow Rich have I been as impressed with a book on the subject of wealth and success. Mr. DeMarco writes from a common, no-nonsense approach on how to become wealthy."
~ Amazon reader review
"Although the title and cover of the book make you think "infomercial for suckers", it's actually THE single best book I have read on this subject so far (and I've read plenty). I don't typically write reviews on books I purchase here on Amazon, but this one was so good that it compelled me to actually get off my lazy butt and post up a review. "
~ Amazon reader review
"If you want to get "rich" while you're young enough to enjoy it, read this book short-circuits you though a lot of the BS."
~ Amazon reader review
"This is an honest to goodness "Get Rich Quick" book. Most "Get Rich Quick" books or programs scam people into believing there is a method to "Get Rich Easy". MJ DeMarco does an extremely good job of telling the truth about what it takes to really achieve wealth. "
~ Amazon reader review
"I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I have read many finance books (Rich Dad, Cramer, Dave Ramsey, etc) and after reading The Millionaire Fastlane, I kept saying to myself "finally, someone who tells it like it is and isn't feeding me BS!"
~ Amazon reader review
"In life, there are people who get it, and people who don't get it. When it comes to building wealth, MJ DeMarco gets it. What really made my jaw drop about this book, however, was his brutal honesty. He exposes many of the misconceptions of the common wealth building 'gurus'..."

About the Author

Former founder and CEO of (1997-2007), multimillionaire entrepreneur, author, and the revolutionary "get rich slow" anti-guru, MJ DeMarco not long ago lived with his mother, mopped floors, and sought the dream like so many others: the dream to live free from bosses, free from 9-5 jobs and alarm clocks, and free from life mediocrity. Through rigorous years of self-study, countless errors and failures, MJ cracked the code to wealth and shockingly discovered that it had nothing to do with jobs, 401(k)s, mutual funds, or penny-pinching your life away for 40 years. By rejecting society's preordained "settle-for-less" financial roadmap, MJ was able to retire YOUNG in his thirties without sacrificing lifestyle. (Yes, he drinks Starbucks coffee, drives exotic cars, and hasn't canceled the movie channels! OMG!) He lives in beautiful Phoenix Arizona and enjoys traveling, dining, writing, softball, fitness, working out and obviously, has a fanatical passion for the Lamborghini marquee.

Cannes has wrapped, and that means it is Lion counting time. While big countries such as USA, England, Brazil or Germany can be proud of their mountains of shiny metal, one tiny nation regularly defies the odds: New Zealand. In 2011 Kiwis pocketed 1 Lion per 155,989 citizens. And since they enjoy taking the piss out of themselves as well as sticking it to the Australians, here is a fun film advertising their national ad award (Axis). And yes, it won a 2012 Lion as well.

Wow. Or maybe, ouch. This TVC by Channel 4 to promote its coverage of the Paralympic Games might hit it like a punch in the stomach. It will give you goosebumps. I quote Slate Magazine that says it’s the most amazing Olympic video you’ll ever see. Must watch. Must share.

Ever went to YouTube for tips and instructions? From using software to cooking and fixing things, instructional videos by everyday people have become our inspiration and indispensable helpers. Lauren Luke for example is one of YouTube’s stars when it comes to all things make up. And BBH London have done a clever collaboration with her to raise awareness for a charity.

Great Leadership by Dan McCathy - 10 Inspirational Examples of Epic Failure and Resiliency

Turning Lemons into Lemonade: 10 Inspirational Examples of Epic Failure and Resiliency

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall."
~ Confucius

Leadership development and failure go hand in hand. By its very nature, development involves trying new things, often in the form of “stretch assignments” in order to challenge yourself and learn new skills.
It’s inevitable that in the process of learning, you’re bound to fall down and skin your knee. One of the traits of all successful people is resiliency – the ability to fail, learn from that failure, and incorporate new skills into your leadership repertoire.

That’s easier said than done. When we screw up, we feel like a loser, and our confidence can take a hit. When that happens, it’s sometimes helpful to keep a few stories in mind of people that messed up way worse than most of us could ever dream of yet ended up smelling like a rose.

Here are ten of my favorites:

1. Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison's teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." He was fired from his first two jobs for being "non-productive." As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."

2. Steve Jobs
We all know about Steve Job’s incredible impact on the world and his many successes. He also had his fair share of failures, including: The Apple III computer, the Lisa, the early Macintosh computers (John Sculley, the CEO Jobs brought to Apple, pushed him out over the Mac’s initially lackluster sales), Apple TV, the NeXT-like Apple G4 Cube, and Apple’s Pages word processor to name a few. At one time he was considered by many the laughing stock of Silicon Valley. Now, of course, he’s compared with Edison as one of the greatest innovators of all time.

3. Thomas Watson
One of my favorite leadership development stories the legendary story about Tom Watson Jr., who guided IBM in its glory days. According to the story, a vice president who had lost the corporation $10 million on an experiment that failed was called to Watson’s office. Fully expecting to be fired, the VP brought along his letter of resignation and presented it to Watson, who refused it with this statement: “Why would we want to lose you? We’ve just given you a $10 million education.”
Watson is also credited with saying, “If you want to succeed, double your failure rate.”

4. Winston Churchill
Churchill failed sixth grade. He was subsequently defeated in every election for public office until he became Prime Minister at the age of 62. He later wrote, "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never, Never, Never, Never give up."

5. Henry Ford
Ford failed and went broke five times before he succeeded.
